Lignans and a neolignan from an aqueous extract of Isatis indigotica roots

Lei Wang, Ming-Hua Chen, Yu-Feng Liu, Ling-Jie Meng, Qing-Lan Guo & Jian-Gong Shi
Four new lignans (1−4) and one new neolignan (5), along with two known lignan derivatives (6 and 7), were isolated from an aqueous extract of the Isatis indigotica root (ban lan gen). Their structures were determined by spectroscopic data analysis, chemical method, and theoretical calculation, for which 1 was proved by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Compound 2 exhibited antiviral activity against influenza virus A/Hanfang/359/95 (H3N2) with an IC50 value of 11.1 µM and a selective index...

Risk factors for acute kidney injury after Stanford type A aortic dissection repair surgery: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Lei Wang, Guodong Zhong, Xiaochai Lv, Yi Dong, Yanting Hou, Xiaofu Dai & Liangwan Chen
Background: Risk factors for acute kidney injury (AKI) after Stanford type A aortic dissection (TAAD) repair are inconsistent in different studies. This meta-analysis systematically analyzed the risk factors so as to early identify the therapeutic targets for preventing AKI. Methods: Studies exploring risk factors for AKI after TAAD repair were searched from four databases from inception to June 2022. The synthesized incidence and risk factors of AKI and its impact on mortality were calculated. Results:...

A scoping review on nutritional intake and nutritional status in people with a major dysvascular lower limb amputation

Aniek M. Kolen, Pieter U. Dijkstra, Rienk Dekker, Jean-Paul P.M. de Vries, Jan H.B. Geertzen & Harriët Jager-Wittenaar
To systematically review literature on nutritional intake, nutritional status and nutritional interventions, and to study their association with short- and long-term clinical outcomes in people with a major dysvascular lower limb amputation. PubMed, Ovid, CINAHL, and The Cochrane Library were searched. Studies were included if nutritional intake, nutritional status, or nutritional interventions in people with a major dysvascular lower limb amputation were analyzed. Of the 3038 unique papers identified, 30 studies were included. Methodological quality...

Nanoparticle-mediated delivery of Tanshinone IIA reduces adverse cardiac remodeling following myocardial infarctions in a mice model: role of NF-κB pathway

Shuai Mao, Lei Wang, Peipei Chen, Yong Lan, Rui Guo & Minzhou Zhang
Our previous works have shown that tanshinone IIA inhibited maladaptive extracellular matrix remodeling in cardiac fibroblasts implicating its potential role in treating of pathologic cardiac remodeling. However, the intrinsically poor solubility and bioavailability of tanshinone IIA hindered its clinical application. Here we develop monomethoxy-poly (ethylene glycol)-poly (lactic acid)-D-α-Tocopheryl polyethylene glycol 1000 succinate (mPEG-PLA-TPGS) nanoparticle incorporating tanshinone IIA (tanshinone IIA-NPs) and study its efficacy in post-infarction left ventricular (LV) remodeling. Male C57BL/6 mice underwent left coronary...

Ensemble and calibration multiply robust estimation for quantile treatment effect

Xiaohong He & Lei Wang
Quantile treatment effects can be important causal estimands in the evaluation of biomedical treatments or interventions for health outcomes such as birthweight and medical cost. However, the existing estimators require either a propensity score model or a conditional density vector model is correctly specified, which is difficult to verify in practice. In this paper, we allow multiple models for propensity score and conditional density vector, then construct a class of calibration estimators based on multiple...

Maximal cardiopulmonary exercise test in patients with chronic low back pain: feasibility, tolerance and relation with central sensitization. An observational study

Jone Ansuategui Echeita, Rienk Dekker, Henrica Rosalien Schiphorst Preuper & Michiel Felix Reneman
To analyze the feasibility of and pain-related tolerance to a maximal cardiopulmonary exercise test (CPET), and the relationship between the aerobic capacity and central sensitization (CS) in patients with chronic low back pain (CLBP). An observational study, combining a cross-sectional and a prospective 24-hour follow-up was performed. Participants underwent a maximal CPET on a cycle ergometer and were assessed with three measures of CS (CS Inventory, quantitative sensory testing and heart rate variability). Before the...

Targeted epigenetic silencing of UCHL1 expression suppresses collagen-1 production in human lung epithelial cells

Dan-Dan Wu, Andy T. Y. Lau, Yan-Ming Xu, Marjan Reinders-Luinge, Mihaly Koncz, Antal Kiss, Wim Timens, Marianne G. Rots & Machteld N. Hylkema
Ubiquitin carboxyl-terminal hydrolase L1 (UCHL1) is highly expressed in smokers, but little is known about the molecular mechanism of UCHL1 in airway epithelium and its possible role in affecting extracellular matrix (ECM) remodelling in the underlying submucosa. Since cigarette smoking is a major cause of lung diseases, we studied its effect on UCHL1 expression and DNA methylation patterns in human bronchial epithelial cells, obtained after laser capture micro-dissection (LCM) or isolated from residual tracheal/main stem...
