3D bioprintable methacrylated carrageenan/sodium alginate dual network hydrogel for vascular tissue engineering scaffolding

Anduo Zhou, Yasong Hu, Chongshuai Chen, Heyi Mao, Lei Wang, Shanfeng Zhang & Xia Huang
3D printing technology has significant advantages in the processing field of vascular tissue engineering. We have developed KCMA/SA hydrogels based on methacrylated carrageenan (KCMA) and sodium alginate (SA), which have low viscosity and shear thinning properties and can be used for 3D printing. The physicochemical double cross-linked network structure leads to good mechanical properties. The composite hydrogels maintain the liquid crystallinity of KC, which causes the HUVECs to align. The KCMA/SA gel filaments printed by...

MC3/SAINT-O-Somes, a novel liposomal delivery system for efficient and safe delivery of siRNA into endothelial cells

Yutong He, Mees Barlag, Josée A. Plantinga, Grietje Molema & Jan A. A. M. Kamps
Increased understanding of chronic inflammatory diseases and the role of endothelial cell (EC) activation herein, have urged interest in sophisticated strategies to therapeutically intervene in activated EC to treat these diseases. Liposome-mediated delivery of therapeutic siRNA in inflammation-activated EC is such a strategy. In this study, we describe the design and characterisation of two liposomal siRNA delivery systems formulated with the cationic MC3 lipid or MC3/SAINT mixed lipids, referred to as MC3-O-Somes (MOS) and MC3/SAINT-O-Somes...

Barriers and facilitators associated with musculoskeletal complaints in individuals with upper limb absence – focus group results and a scoping review

Anneliek A. Peters, Sietke G. Postema, Michiel F. Reneman & Corry K. van der Sluis
To guide better prevention and treatment and to develop research priorities, this study aims to create an overview of facilitators and barriers for the development and persistence of musculoskeletal complaints (MSCs) in individuals with upper limb absence (ULA). Exploratory mixed methods design. A focus group (FG) was organized with individuals with ULA about MSCs and associated factors. An inductive approach was employed to the transcript and the studies. A scoping review was performed to systematically...

A scoping review on nutritional intake and nutritional status in people with a major dysvascular lower limb amputation

Aniek M. Kolen, Pieter U. Dijkstra, Rienk Dekker, Jean-Paul P.M. de Vries, Jan H.B. Geertzen & Harriët Jager-Wittenaar
To systematically review literature on nutritional intake, nutritional status and nutritional interventions, and to study their association with short- and long-term clinical outcomes in people with a major dysvascular lower limb amputation. PubMed, Ovid, CINAHL, and The Cochrane Library were searched. Studies were included if nutritional intake, nutritional status, or nutritional interventions in people with a major dysvascular lower limb amputation were analyzed. Of the 3038 unique papers identified, 30 studies were included. Methodological quality...

Nanoparticle-mediated delivery of Tanshinone IIA reduces adverse cardiac remodeling following myocardial infarctions in a mice model: role of NF-κB pathway

Shuai Mao, Lei Wang, Peipei Chen, Yong Lan, Rui Guo & Minzhou Zhang
Our previous works have shown that tanshinone IIA inhibited maladaptive extracellular matrix remodeling in cardiac fibroblasts implicating its potential role in treating of pathologic cardiac remodeling. However, the intrinsically poor solubility and bioavailability of tanshinone IIA hindered its clinical application. Here we develop monomethoxy-poly (ethylene glycol)-poly (lactic acid)-D-α-Tocopheryl polyethylene glycol 1000 succinate (mPEG-PLA-TPGS) nanoparticle incorporating tanshinone IIA (tanshinone IIA-NPs) and study its efficacy in post-infarction left ventricular (LV) remodeling. Male C57BL/6 mice underwent left coronary...

Ensemble and calibration multiply robust estimation for quantile treatment effect

Xiaohong He & Lei Wang
Quantile treatment effects can be important causal estimands in the evaluation of biomedical treatments or interventions for health outcomes such as birthweight and medical cost. However, the existing estimators require either a propensity score model or a conditional density vector model is correctly specified, which is difficult to verify in practice. In this paper, we allow multiple models for propensity score and conditional density vector, then construct a class of calibration estimators based on multiple...

Maximal cardiopulmonary exercise test in patients with chronic low back pain: feasibility, tolerance and relation with central sensitization. An observational study

Jone Ansuategui Echeita, Rienk Dekker, Henrica Rosalien Schiphorst Preuper & Michiel Felix Reneman
To analyze the feasibility of and pain-related tolerance to a maximal cardiopulmonary exercise test (CPET), and the relationship between the aerobic capacity and central sensitization (CS) in patients with chronic low back pain (CLBP). An observational study, combining a cross-sectional and a prospective 24-hour follow-up was performed. Participants underwent a maximal CPET on a cycle ergometer and were assessed with three measures of CS (CS Inventory, quantitative sensory testing and heart rate variability). Before the...
