Group 16: Challenge: Task 3 - Detect defects in electron microscopy images

Xuerui Guo, Zien Ma & Jayanta Kumar Pal
Our task is to design a model automatically detect defection in several graphene Sheets. From 256*256 whole graphene sheet, 48*48 subset patches are generated, see figure1. 32 patches of defected cases and 2279 patches of non-defected cases with ground truth information are provided. The defected patches are labelled as 1 and the non-detected ones are labelled as 0.

CD1d-dependent rewiring of lipid metabolism in macrophages regulates innate immune responses.

Phillip M Brailey, Lauren Evans, Juan Carlos López-Rodríguez, Anthony Sinadinos, Victoria Tyrrel, Gavin Kelly, Valerie O'Donnell, Peter Ghazal, Susan John & Patricia Barral
Alterations in cellular metabolism underpin macrophage activation, yet little is known regarding how key immunological molecules regulate metabolic programs in macrophages. Here we uncover a function for the antigen presenting molecule CD1d in the control of lipid metabolism. We show that CD1d-deficient macrophages exhibit a metabolic reprogramming, with a downregulation of lipid metabolic pathways and an increase in exogenous lipid import. This metabolic rewiring primes macrophages for enhanced responses to innate signals, as CD1d-KO cells...

Changes in incidence and clinical features of inflammatory bowel disease in Cardiff, UK over 50 years: an update for 2005–2016

Bradley Arms-Williams, A. Barney Hawthorne, Rebecca Cannings-John, Alexander Berry, Philip Harborne & Anjali Trivedi
Population-based studies of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) in Cardiff have recorded data back to 1930 for Crohn’s disease (CD) and 1968 for ulcerative colitis (UC). This study compares incidence and phenotype for 2005–2016 with past data. All new IBD cases resident in the Cardiff at diagnosis were collected retrospectively for the 12-year period 2005–2016, and compared with previous Cardiff data for trends in incidence and phenotype. Overall incidence was age/sex corrected to the UK population....

SDH5 down-regulation mitigates the damage of osteoporosis via inhibiting the MyD88/NF-κB signaling pathway

Hongzi Wu, Dehua Zhang, Haijun Xia, Yongqi Li, Feng Mao & Yi Liao
Osteoporosis has become a serious public health problem especially in postmenopausal women. This work aims to assess both the function and mechanism of SDH5 in osteoporosis. The animal model of osteoporosis in Sprague-Dawley rats was established by utilizing ovariectomy (OVX). The trabecular bone morphometry had been determined by micro-CT, and tibia injury of rats was detected through HE and alcian blue staining. Meanwhile, the levels of oxidative stress factors, including malondialdehyde, catalase, glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px),...

Effects of glycerol and glucose on docosahexaenoic acid synthesis in Aurantiochyrium limacinum SFD-1502 by transcriptome analysis

Huaqiu Zhang, Xiangying Zhao, Chen Zhao, Jiaxiang Zhang, Yang Liu, Mingjing Yao & Jianjun Liu
Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) has numerous functions in adjusting the organic health and pragmatic value in medicine and food field. In this study, we compared glycerol and glucose as the only carbon source for DHA production by Aurantiochytrium. When the glycerol concentration was 120 g/L, the maximum DHA yield was 11.08 g/L, and the DHA yield increased significantly, reaching 47.67% of the total lipid content. When the cells grew in glucose, the DHA proportion was 37.39%....
