Creating possibility spaces for the development of circular bioeconomy initiatives
Per-Anders Langendahl, Cecilia Mark-Herbert & Matthew Cook
To help move society towards more sustainable states, policies have been developed in various countries to create a circular bioeconomy (CBE) in biobased sectors such as forestry and agriculture. In operationalizing CBE, initiatives must be created in which feedback loops between life-cycle stages are established to enable a “stock” of resources to be recirculated in the economy. By creating such feedback loops, CBE aims to decouple economic growth from natural resource depletion and degradation. However,...

24-Epicastasterone and KH2PO4 protect grain production of wheat crops from terminal heat impacts by modulating leaf physiology
Min Li, Qianfei Wei, Yulei Zhu, Jincai Li, Najeeb Ullah & Youhong Song
Heat stress during the grain filling is one of most critical factors impacting grain yield in winter wheat. In a two-year field experiment, we studied the effects of 24-Epicastasterone and KH2PO4 on heat-stressed wheat applied during different times. A completely randomized block design was used with three reagents, that is, 24-Epicastasterone, KH2PO4 and H2O and three spraying times, that is, pre-heat, under-heat and post-heat. Two cultivars, that is, Huaimai 33 and Annong 0711 were subjected...

Supplementary material for 'Orthoester Formation in Fungal Meroterpenoid Austalide F Biosynthesis' from Orthoester formation in fungal meroterpenoid austalide F biosynthesis
Takayoshi Awakawa, Wei Liu, Tongxuan Bai, Tomo Taniguchi & Ikuro Abe
Fungal meroterpenoids are important bioactive natural products. Their biosynthetic machineries are highly diverse, and reconstitutions lead to the production of unnatural meroterpenoids. In this study, heterologous gene expression in Aspergillus oryzae and in vitro assays elucidated the biosynthetic pathway of the orthoester-containing fungal meroterpenoid austalide F. Remarkably, the α-ketoglutarate-dependent oxygenase AstB produces the hemiacetal intermediate, and the methyltransferase AstL transfers a methyl group on it to construct the orthoester functionality. This study presents the extraordinary...
