Austrian “Kingdom of Serbia” (1718- 1739). The Infrastructural Innovations introduced by the Habsburg Domination

Fabrizio Rudi
From the Treaty of Passarowitz up to the Treaty of Belgrade, Austrian domination of Northern Serbia, and also of Posavina, Oltenia and Banat improved, although temporarily, the former Ottoman administrative apparatus even if only temporarily. While a Commissio Neoacquistica nominated the administrative personnel for the new acquired lands exclusively among the personalities of greater trust for the Viennese court, the local population knew some important infrastructural benefits whose effects weren’t completely cancelled after the 1739...

Adolfo Panarello, Giuseppe Pandolfo & Paolo Mietto
A first determination of the value of the annual growth factor (0.766 mm/yr) of Aspicilia cinerea has been done through the application of a lichenometric system calibrated in the surroundings of the “Devil’s Trails” palaeontological site (Roccamonfina volcano). The application of this parameter to some samples within this site allowed researchers to know that the re-exposure of the surface preserving fossil human and animal footprints did not start before the early 1800s. This seems perfectly...

Osservazioni sui meccanismi di locomozione dell’autore della Pista A delle “Ciampate del diavolo”

Alessandro Mondanaro, Adolfo Panarello, Maria Modafferi, Marina Melchionna, Carmela Serio, Francesco Carotenuto, Stefano Tavani, Paolo Mietto & Pasquale Raia
The world-famous Roccamonfina site represents one among the very few opportunities to investigate about the evolution of bipedal locomotion of Middle Pleistocene humans. The site includes at least 80, finely preserved human footprints in anatomical position, divided into four trackways. We applied a biomechanical model to verify if the Roccamonfina’s individuals minimized energy expenditure during locomotion, moving downhill along an oblique route cutting the slope in order to avoid the steepest gradient. In keeping with...

Toxicological effects of rare earth elements to photosynthetic organisms

Edith Padilla Suárez, Antonietta Siciliano, Marco Guida, Giovanni Pagano, Marco Trifuoggi, Sara Serafini, Emilia Galdiero, Franca Tommasi, Giusy Lofrano, Isidora Gjata, Antonios Apostolos Brouziotis, Renato Liguori & Giovanni Libralato
Rare earth elements (REEs) have become a key component in many technological applications. Due to the rapid increase in their use, the potential environmental exposure has also expanded. However, the effects on the ecosystem have not been yet thoroughly evaluated, leaving many knowledge gaps. To evaluate the effects of REEs, a set of experiments with acute and chronic exposure were performed on photosynthetic organisms. The effects of acute exposure of four elements (cerium, gadolinium, lanthanum...

Libri elettronici. Pratiche della didattica e della ricerca

Roberto Delle Donne, Antonella De Robbio, Maria Guercio, Giuseppe Vitiello, Gino Roncaglia, Maurella Della Seta & Rodolfo Figari
This proceedings e-book contains papers presented at the national Symposium on “Electronic Books and the practices of scholarly research”, held in Naples, Italy, on 20 June 2003. The advent of new technologies, tools, and digital resources is changing how scholars conduct their work, keep updated in their field or fields of study, and think about research. Moving from the reconstruction of the market of scientific communication, copyright policies, and management of long-term conservation strategies, the...

Similitude theory applied to plates in vibroacoustic field

Alessandro Casaburo, Giuseppe Petrone, Francesco Franco & Sergio De Rosa
Similitude methods are a set of tools which allow the design of scaled-up or scaled-down models of a full-scale structure called a prototype. In this way, the financial and temporal costs of experimental tests, and the problems associated with the set-up of too large (or small) test articles, may be overcome. This article provides a brief review of similitude methods applied to plates in a vibroacoustic field. Particularly, it is dedicated to a thorough analysis...

Exploring Differences in Household Debt Across Euro Area Countries and the United States

Dimitris Christelis, Dimitris Georgarakos & Michael Ehrmann
We use internationally comparable household-level data for ten euro area economies and the United States to investigate cross-country differences in debt holdings and the potential of debt overhang. U.S. households have the highest prevalence of both collateralized and non-collateralized debt, hold comparatively large amounts of loans outstanding, and face a higher debt-service burden. These differences are mainly attributed to the U.S. economic environment, which appears to be more conducive to both types of debt. For...
