Background: Novel coronavirus pneumonia (COVID-19) is prevalent around the world. We aimed to describe epidemiological features and clinical course in Shanghai. Methods: We retrospectively analysed 325 cases admitted at Shanghai Public Health Clinical Center, between January 20 and February 29, 2020. Results: 47.4% (154/325) had visited Wuhan within 2 weeks of illness onset. 57.2% occurred in 67 clusters; 40% were situated within 53 family clusters. 83.7% developed fever during the disease course. Median times from...

Assessing spatiotemporal variations and predicting changes in ecosystem service values in the Guangdong–Hong Kong–Macao Greater Bay Area

Jie Zhang, Xuecao Li, Chenchen Zhang, Le Yu, Jingzhe Wang, Xiangyin Wu, Zhongwen Hu, Zihan Zhai, Qingquan Li, Guofeng Wu & Tiezhu Shi
Rapid economic development and interference by human activities in rapid urbanization regions have caused great land use/land cover change (LUCC), which significantly affects ecosystem functions and services. It is crucial to assess the spatiotemporal evolution of ecosystem service value (ESV) in such regions, especially for the Guangdong–Hong Kong–Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA) in China. In this study, we investigated and predicted the effect of LUCC on the ESV in the GBA from 1990 to 2030...

Jiapeng Li, Yue Yu, Yaning Xu, Fengxi Li, Yuqi Liu, Yifei Sun, Chunyu Wang, Peng Chen & Lei Wang
In this work, an efficient synthesis of 3-hydroxy chromones was accomplished through oxidative cyclization mediated by lipase. This enzymatic process has salient features of environmental friendliness, mild reaction condition, satisfactory yield, green reusable biocatalyst, and short reaction time. The proposed method expands the application of lipase in organic synthesis.

Effect of 2,4-dichlorophenol on the production of methane from anaerobic granular sludge during anaerobic digestion through spectroscopy analysis

Mingrun Li, Fei Han, Zhaoran Zhang, Huiping Zeng, Dong Li & Jie Zhang
Chlorophenols in urban high organic wastewater increases, which plays an inhibitory role in the process of anaerobic fermentation and methanogenesis. The release rules of extracellular polymers (EPS) and soluble microbial products (SMP) and the production of methane from anaerobic granular sludge were evaluated by spectroscopic analysis. The methane production was reduced by 21.6%, 41.4% and 50.5% respectively by adding 2,4-DCP of different concentrations (25, 50 and 100 mg/L). Activity tests of methanogenic functional enzymes indicated...

Distributed ARIMA Models for Ultra-long Time Series

Xiaoqian Wang, Yanfei Kang, Rob J Hyndman & Feng Li
Providing forecasts for ultra-long time series plays a vital role in various activities, such as investment decisions, industrial production arrangements, and farm management. This paper develops a novel distributed forecasting framework to tackle challenges associated with forecasting ultra-long time series by utilizing the industrystandard MapReduce framework. The proposed model combination approach facilitates distributed time series forecasting by combining the local estimators of ARIMA (AutoRegressive Integrated Moving Average) models delivered from worker nodes and minimizing a...

3D bioprintable methacrylated carrageenan/sodium alginate dual network hydrogel for vascular tissue engineering scaffolding

Anduo Zhou, Yasong Hu, Chongshuai Chen, Heyi Mao, Lei Wang, Shanfeng Zhang & Xia Huang
3D printing technology has significant advantages in the processing field of vascular tissue engineering. We have developed KCMA/SA hydrogels based on methacrylated carrageenan (KCMA) and sodium alginate (SA), which have low viscosity and shear thinning properties and can be used for 3D printing. The physicochemical double cross-linked network structure leads to good mechanical properties. The composite hydrogels maintain the liquid crystallinity of KC, which causes the HUVECs to align. The KCMA/SA gel filaments printed by...

Pilots’ mental workload variation when taking a risk in a flight scenario: a study based on flight simulator experiments

Lei Wang, Shan Gao, Wei Tan & Jingyi Zhang
Pilots’ operation behavior in flight is associated with their mental state variables such as workload, situation awareness, stress, etc. The objective of this study was to investigate the dynamic process of mental workload for pilots who perform a risky flight task in simulated scenarios. Two empirical experiments were conducted to address this issue. In experiment one, 19 trainee pilots divided into high-risk and low-risk groups performed a target-search task in a low-altitude visual flight. The...

Enhanced 2-MIB degradation by UV-LED/chlorine process: reaction kinetics, wavelength dependence, influencing factors and degradation pathways

Zhen-Ning Luo, Tian-Yang Zhang, Meng-Yuan Xu, Ruo-Fan Fang, Xing-Xing Wang, Zheng-Xiong Zheng, Heng-Xuan Zhao, Zong-Chen Li, Yu-Lin Tang & Bin Xu
The efficient removal of 2-Methylisoborneol (2-MIB), a typical odour component, in water treatment plants (WTPs), poses a great challenge to conventional water treatment technology due to its chemical stability. In this study, the combination of ultraviolet light-emitting diode (UV-LED) and chlorine (UV-LED/chlorine) was exploited for 2-MIB removal, and the role of ultraviolet (UV) wavelength was investigated systematically. The results showed that UV or chlorination alone did not degrade 2-MIB effectively, and the UV/chlorine process could...
