Acute kidney injury in group A streptococcal bacteraemia: incidence, outcome and predictive value of C-reactive protein

Johanna Vilhonen, Niina Koivuviita, Tero Vahlberg, Jaana Vuopio & Jarmo Oksi
A ubiquitous human pathogen, Streptococcus pyogenes (Group A Streptococcus, GAS) causes infections from mild pharyngitis to severe septic infections. Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a condition of prompt decline of renal function. The aim of the present study was to report the incidence and outcome of AKI in GAS bacteraemia and to evaluate the diagnostic value of serum C-reactive protein as an indicator of AKI. All adult patients with GAS bacteraemia treated at Turku University...

Association between participation in the Northern Finland Birth Cohorts and cardiometabolic disorders

Martta Kerkelä, Mika Gissler, Tanja Nordström, Olavi Ukkola & Juha Veijola
We studied the association between participation in the longitudinal follow-up study and cardiometabolic disorders in two longitudinal studies which started prospectively in the antenatal period: the Northern Finland Cohort 1966 (NFBC1966) and the Northern Finland Birth Cohort 1986 (NFBC1986). Both birth cohorts have been followed up since birth with multiple follow-ups including questionnaires, and clinical examinations. The NFBC studies were compared to comparison cohorts of individuals who were born in the same area as the...

Long-term outcomes of mechanical versus biological valve prosthesis in native mitral valve infective endocarditis

Markus Malmberg, Vesa Anttila, Päivi Rautava, Jarmo Gunn & Ville Kytö
Objectives. To study the long-term outcomes of mitral valve replacement with mechanical or biological valve prostheses in native mitral valve infective endocarditis patients. Desing. We conducted a retrospective, nationwide, multicenter cohort study with patients aged ≤70 years who were treated with mitral valve replacement for native mitral valve infective endocarditis in Finland between 2004 and 2017. Results. The endpoints were all-cause mortality, ischemic stroke, major bleeding, and mitral valve reoperations. The results were adjusted for...

Background: Longitudinal studies examining mental health trajectories in refugees and asylum seekers are scarce. Objectives: To investigate trajectories of psychological symptoms and wellbeing in refugees and asylum seekers, and identify factors associated with these trajectories. Method: 912 asylum seekers and refugees from the control arm of three trials in Europe (n = 229), Turkey (n = 320), and Uganda (n = 363) were included. We described trajectories of psychological symptoms and wellbeing, and used trauma...

Forecasting the nearly unforecastable: why aren’t airline bookings adhering to the prediction algorithm?

Saravanan Thirumuruganathan, Soon-gyo Jung, Dianne Ramirez Robillos, Joni Salminen & Bernard J. Jansen
Using 27 million flight bookings for 2 years from a major international airline company, we built a Next Likely Destination model to ascertain customers’ next flight booking. The resulting model achieves an 89% predictive accuracy using historical data. A unique aspect of the model is the incorporation of self-competence, where the model defers when it cannot reasonably make a recommendation. We then compare the performance of the Next Likely Destination model in a real-life consumer...

Plurilingual School and University Curricula

Schlabach Joachim & Britta Hufeisen
This contribution introduces plurilingual curricula as a development tool geared both to linking up the curricula of individual languages and fostering cross-linkages between language and content subject curricula. This approach represents a solid fundament for tertiary language didactics and can also supply a common foundation for school and university language learning policies and relevant school-university cooperation projects. The principle underlying (genuinely!) plurilingual university courses based on research and featuring a doubly multilingual didactic approach is...
