Engineering Corynebacterium glutamicum as a designer-bug for the bio-based production of chemical building blocks and biofuelStefan Wieschalka
The restriction of fossil raw materials, as well as the impact of their use on the environment heads to a global social and economic crisis. Therefore, a strong political and technical interest arises for the replacement of petroleum-derived chemicals and fuels by such derived from biomass. The well-known amino acid producer Corynebacterium glutamicum was used in the last decade for the bio-based production of building block chemicals, as well as for biofuels. In this work,...

Classification of ‘Granny Smith’ apples with different levels of superficial scald severity based on targeted metabolites and discriminant analysisAsanda Mditshwa, Olaniyi A Fawole, Filicity Vries, Kobus Van Der Merwe, Elke Crouch & Umezuruike Linus Opara
To study the metabolic changes in ‘Granny Smith’ apples with different severities of superficial scald, fruit were stored in normal refrigerated air (0°C, 95% RH) for 12 weeks followed by 7 d shelf-life under room conditions (20°C, 65% RH). Fruit were graded to five groups based on scald severity and analysed for ethylene, α-farnesene and 6-methyl-5-hepten-2-one (MHO) levels. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) were measured by confocal laser-scanning microscopy on apple peel treated with fluorescent probe...

Endothelial dysfunction and oxidative stress are associated with hypertension but whether endothelial superoxide plays a role in the early development of essential hypertension remains uncertain. We investigated whether eNOS-derived endothelial oxidative stress is involved in the regulation of blood pressure. Wild-type eNOS (eNOS-Tg) or a novel dimer-destabilized eNOS-mutant harboring a partially disrupted zinc-finger (C101A-eNOS-Tg) was introduced in C57BL/6 in an endothelial-specific manner. C101A-eNOS-Tg showed significantly increased superoxide generation, protein- and eNOS-tyrosine-nitration, eNOS-S-glutathionylation, eNOS1176/79-phosphorylation and AMP-kinase...
Neue Medien finden in allen Bildungskontexten zunehmend Verwendung.

Experimental study on salt deterioration of salt contaminated earthen materials under dry-wet cyclesY. X. Shen, W. W. Chen, J. Kuang & W. F. Du
On the Silk Road in the northwest of China, there is a large number of precious ancient relics, such as the Great Wall with beacon towers and castles, the Jiaohe Ruins etc. Most of these ancient relics are earthen architecture sites, which is different from many monuments that are usually made of rocks or metal materials. Specifically, these ancient relics have suffered different levels of deterioration due to long term dry-wet cycles in this typical...
